Role Purpose
The Data Engineer will provide technical support on the design, development, and maintenance of robust data pipelines and data platforms, using modern technologies, that enable efficient, high-quality, and reliable data flow across the organization. The Data Engineer ensures the availability of clean, well-structured data to support analytics, data science and business intelligence initiatives - ultimately driving faster, evidence-based decision-making. The candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize data systems, enhance interoperability between platforms and develop strategies for data acquisition and product innovation within a dynamic, multi-project environment. HISP SA has a dual engineering reporting structure. For data engineering standards and processes, the data engineer reports to the Senior Data Engineer for technical guidance and skills development. For project coordination and deliverables, the data engineer reports to the appropriate Engineering Project Manager.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the process of developing accurate system documentation to define system architecture, architecture and processes as part of system documentation
- Research and develop strategies for data acquisition and the creation of new data products that drive innovation and business value.
- Contribute to project reports and performance reports.
- Design, automate and optimise scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to ensure efficient data ingestion, transformation, and delivery with consistent performance, reliability, and scalability
- Develop scalable data infrastructure leveraging innovative and modern technologies to enable efficient data processing, integration and analytics.
- Design, build and optimise databases aligned with organisational data architecture standards, ensuring high-performance and cost-efficient data storage and processing systems.
- Ensure data storage and processing systems are designed for high performance and cost efficiency.
- Ensure data integrity through effective cleaning, validation, and transformation, supported by robust data quality frameworks and well-documented metadata for transparency and traceability
- Collaborate with data analysts, data scientists, and stakeholders to translate data needs into technical solutions, providing high-quality datasets that support analytics and machine learning while ensuring data relevance and contextual accuracy.
- Evaluate and adopt innovative tools and technologies to improve data engineering processes, contribute to new data products and services, and stay current with emerging trends in cloud, big data, and industry best practices
- Maintain clear technical documentation for data pipelines, flows, and system configurations, and generate reports and dashboards to monitor pipeline performance, system health, and data quality.]
- The successful candidate will ensure that their weekly timesheet submissions are accurate and up to date.
Qualifications
- Degree in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline and at least 3 years' professional experience in IT, Engineering or other relevant industry
- Diploma in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related discipline and at least 6 years' professional experience in IT, Engineering, or other relevant industry
- Experience in designing, building and maintaining ETL/ELT data pipelines for large-scale or complex data environments.
- Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Apache Airflow for scheduling and automation of data pipelines.
- Familiarity with big data processing frameworks.
- Knowledge of dbt (Data build tool) transformation and modelling, including model design, testing, documentation and deployment following analytics engineering best practices.
- Practical experience in data warehouse and lakehouse design and management within modern data stack environments.
- Advanced Python programming skills, with hands-on experience in developing reusable, modular and production-grade data engineering solutions.
- Hands-on experience with SQL and database development in both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server) and NoSQL databases.
- Experience in data modelling, database schema design, and optimisation for analytics and operational efficiency.
- Experience in version control and DevOps/DataOps Practices (git, CI/CD etc.).
- Understanding of API design, development and integration.
- This position is open to Lesotho nationals and permanent residents of Lesotho only.
